Yankees and Royals

For the past six years, I’ve been working with the New York Yankees to help produce their Media Guide. This past August I went to Kansas City and shot their game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. It occurred to me today that I never posted some of those shots. So six months later, here you go…

Monster Dunk | Nebraska pounds Illinois

Posted By Aaron Babcock / February, 21, 2012 / 0 comments

Been a very rough introduction to the Big Ten Conference for Husker hoops. They’ve been mired in the basement of league standings. As I posted here a couple of weeks ago, they had a huge upset over Indiana, but the wins have been hard to come by. Saturday night they absolutely throttled Illinois, a team that seemed destined for the NCAA Tournament at one point this season. Nebraska led by more than 30 at one point in the game, thanks to a 36-4 run. The best play of the game, and probably the season, was a one-handed tomahawk jam by Caleb Walker from Bo Spencer. I was lucky enough to be in position for both the alley-oop and the finish. I’ve also included the YouTube link here to get the full experience.

Fun new project | Cornhusker Antiques

I’ve had an idea brewing in my head for a couple of months about how interesting it might be to photograph some of the great pieces of Husker memorabilia that people have collected over the years. I’ve seen 80- and 90-year-old ticket stubs, old programs and some beautiful hand-made creations over the years. Some of these items are incredibly valuable and go on eBay for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Others may not have a monetary value, but have a great story tied to them.

After convincing some friends to let me borrow their treasures, I rented out Randy Hampton’s photo studio for the afternoon and shot several boxes worth of items. We’ll be featuring these in upcoming issues of Huskers Illustrated Magazine. Obviously I hope that readers will not only enjoy seeing these beautiful items, but may opt to participate in the project by letting us photograph their Husker treasures.

This interesting piece is a piggy bank that was produced by First National Bank of Omaha during the 60s, I believe. As I understand it, they also produced them for some of the other area colleges. They are pretty rare, as you can imagine.

I’m curious what’s your most treasured Husker item or memory?

Carrie & Drew | Nebraska Engagement Photography

If Sunday morning was any indication, Carrie and Drew are in for a lifetime of fun. Any couple that can have this much fun at 9:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning (despite below zero temperatures), can handle just about anything! Talk about a couple of troopers… Of course, as my wife Jen points out – what else would you expect from Creighton grads? I was seriously outnumbered by Bluejays.

After deciding on our plan of attack at Blue Line Coffee in Dundee, we spent some time trucking through the snow at Memorial Park before wrapping up at Carrie’s place. A big thanks to Marley for allowing us to visit!  We can’t wait to shoot your wedding this June.

I never usually sit around and watch the half-time entertainment. But Nebraska featured Acrodunk at the Ohio State game last week. I’ve seen a number of similar performances over the years (I think it started with the BudLight Daredevils about 15 years ago), but these guys seemed to push the envelope more than previous groups. My favorite part was where the one of the performers (Jerry L. Burrell) dunked and climbed on top of the backboard. To the amazement of the student section, he then did a backflip to finish the dunk. Anyways, the photos were kind of unique, so I thought I would share.

The best and worst, in one week

Been shooting some college basketball lately. Saw Nebraska upset No. 11 Indiana, only to return with the worst home loss in school history against Ohio State. Wins are more fun to shoot…

Sunrise at 36,000 feet

The bright side of leaving Seattle at 6 a.m. was a sunrise at 30,000-plus feet. The sun rise lit up the bottom of the wings of our plane, making for a gorgeous shot from my window.

Using the iPhone

I’ve been making more of an effort to try and use my iPhone for photography. OK, so I won’t be showing up to a Husker basketball game with only the iPhone in tow, but it definitely is capable of producing some great images. Seattle photographer Chase Jarvis published a book in the last couple of years with photos taken exclusively with the iPhone and he’s incredibly creative. I kind of think of my iPhone like an artist would of a sketch pad – a collection of ideas, that may, or may not lead to future inspiration.

With that in mind, here’s a few of my recent favorites from the iPhone.

A little time with the family

It’s always great to get back to Seattle, more specifically Enumclaw, Wash., to visit my family. The family has grown since my last trip home. My new nephew Jack, named after my father, was born Nov. 17 and he’s quite the special guy. Anyways, a few photos of Jack and his big sister, Lucy.

First-ever Big Ten win

Posted By Aaron Babcock / January, 12, 2012 / 0 comments

After an 0-4 start in the Big Ten Conference, Nebraska men’s basketball got a win against Penn State Wednesday night. Only a couple of shots to share, because I’m heading to Seattle. If you want to see more, you can check out my free gallery on HuskersIllustrated.com. Maybe I’ll some photos to share from home…
